Fiction Editor's 3 Favourites - Lane End by Van Demal

Heron

The second of my three favourite stories from my time as Fiction Editor at The View From Here is 'Lane End' from Van Demal. There's no order to my three choices - I like them all as much as each other. I chose them because I could still remember, with each one, how I felt after reading the story for the first time.

Even down to the title, 'Lane End' perfectly reflects a couple's futile attempt to rebuild a relationship that no longer works. The focus on what is outside, the neglected house. As I sit here thinking about it I keep discovering new layers. 'Lane End' is a sad story; a very honest story.
